Schoology Transition FAQ
Overview
As of September 30th, 2023 the University ended it's contract with Schoology. Their parent company, PowerSchool has since deactivated our instance in October, and we can no longer recover anything from that system. Please review the FAQ provided below.
Can I still access Schoology?
No. PowerSchool has removed all access and data from our previous Schoology site. They also retired the free version of the LMS on October 1st, 2023, so only current paying institutions can have access to Schoology.
What was copied over from Schoology?
During the transition to Canvas, IDTS archived the following:
- All 2022-2023 Academic Year Course Shells
- Note: Only course materials could be exported from Schoology. This includes Assignments, Pages, Quizzes, Discussion prompts, and attached files.Grade data, rubrics, and student submissions needed to be backed up by individual instructors.
- All 8-week Online "Master Course Shells" which are now called Blueprints
- These course shells that are co-owned by the University were transferred into Blueprints,. They also received the 'white glove' treatment where material formatting was cleaned and organized to fit Canvas's course structure.
- Any previous course that instructors requested we archived and transferred to Canvas. Those courses have access granted to the faculty whom requested them.
How do I finish my incomplete course from Schoology?
-
Students: Please reach out to the faculty member who you were working with to finish your incomplete. They will need to notify you on what option they selected before access to Schoology was removed.
-
Faculty: Please check your records to see if you requested or declined IDTS to backup course data.
Please note that IDTS performed outreach to faculty who had outstanding incompletes (per the Registrar's Office) from the 2022-2023 academic year. This outreach occurred in September of 2023, and all School Deans were included in on the conversation. Faculty were asked to indicate if they wanted any information backed up or if they had made other arrangements. We also provided instructions on how to archive student submissions and gradebook data. IDTS is not responsible for any data that was not requested to be archived.
Why wasn't everything backed up?
Schoology was a proprietary learning management system that did not have the ability to bulk export data into a common file type called a Common Cartridge file. This meant that all exports from Schoology and imports into Canvas had to be done manually by a member of the IDTS team, often averaging between 1-3 hours per course. Larger, more in-depth courses took up to a day to backup and transfer.
It was not feasible to back up every course over the 5-year contract, so we notified the faculty and university community that we would only transfer the course materials over from the 2022-2023 Academic year, and older courses that were requested by faculty.
